Highlights of the 2017 Uganda Top 100 mid-sized companies’ survey
In a bid to connect with and have a better understanding of the SME sector in Uganda, Vodafone partnered with KPMG and Monitor Publications Limited in this year’s Top 100 mid-sized company survey. KPMG and Monitor Publications Limited came up with Uganda’s Top 100 mid-sized companies Survey-that seeks to identify Uganda’s fastest growing Medium-Sized Companies to showcase business excellence and highlight some of the country’s most successful entrepreneurship stories.
It is an initiative through which Vodafone has participated to appreciate the value that the SME sector contributes to the economy and enhance the growth of SMEs in Uganda. The SME sector contributes up to 75% of Uganda’s GDP and is a big contributor to Vodafone’s customer base and is in line with the telecom’s business strategy.
In its 9th year, the Uganda Top 100 mid-sized companies’ survey is the largest and most comprehensive gathering of SME business minds. It attracts entrepreneurs from the different sectors and industries of the economy as well as government agencies and industry associations. The survey takes into consideration the profiles of businesses, business capital, strategic planning, business management and performance, business innovation certifications, future plans, business confidence and support for the greater East African integration.
Findings from the survey indicate that 63% of the participating companies were from within Kampala and from several sectors across the country. 43% of businesses indicated that they adopted new technology, innovative solutions, equipment or significantly new business processes. 73% of the participating companies were fully Ugandan owned and more than 64% of the companies were more than 10 years old.
Through the Top 100 SME survey, Vodafone has been able to connect with and understand the SME segment better. The telecom has been able to collect more insights from the various activities around the survey and will gather even more of these from the survey results. “This will inform our strategies while designing unique products that are relevant to the SME segment and from an economic perspective, we shall foster the closure of the business gaps on the digital platform,” said Progress Chisenga, the Marketing Director at Vodafone.
The survey results will be released during the Top 100 mid-sized survey Conference on 9th November 2017 and companies that have progressed will be awarded at the Gala Dinner on 10th November 2017. Vodafone will take part in awarding the successful companies during these events and will continue to support the SME sector in its capacity. Although this year’s survey activities are coming to an end, Vodafone will continue to use the data from the survey to design even better products for the SME segment and enhance SME growth through the closure of the digital divide.
